Dorthel Gray Sutton, was born March 24,1936, to Johnny and Ollie Gray, in Cushing, Texas. She attended Rusk County public schools, graduating from Laneville High School. Dorthel held various positions of leadership for more than 37 years while serving at Methodist Hospital, located in Houston’s Renowned Medical Center. She also received her License Of Cosmetology during this time, providing excellent service to many clients as a Beautician. While maintaining both jobs, she also served her loving mother, Ollie Gray, as caretaker. Shortly after retiring from her careers, she had a desire to keep working and was hired by Humble ISD. She worked a few years longer before retiring for good to overcome a diagnosis of Myeloma Cancer in 2005.
Dorthel attended Lyons Unity Baptist Church and later became a member of New Light Christian Center where she served for many years. She was ;a wonderful mother, caring sibling, and friend; she was known to be a people's person. She found fulfillment in helping people and touching lives while residing in Houston and Humble Texas. She will always be remembered for her quick wit, infectious smile, and for having a kind giving spirit.
On Wednesday, July 15, 2020, Dorthel began her rest at age 84. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Sutton Sr.; parents, Johnny and Ollie Gray; sisters, Opal Gray Barrientez and Nola Gray Starling.
She is survived by her children, Chenia Thompson and her husband James, Alison Howard and her husband Joe, and Roy Sutton Jr. and his wife Tracy; sisters, Maxine Minor and Valrie Washington; grandchildren, Erica Walters, Bruce Jones, Roy Sutton III, and Immanuel Sutton; great Grandchildren, Emarie Jones and Elijah Walters; and host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
