On Monday, April 10, 1939, in Jacksonville, Texas, W.C & Bessie Mae Sharp welcomed a beautiful baby girl and named her Narlene Black. Narlene remained a resident of Jacksonville, Texas until her final day.
Narlene was a lifelong member of Seminary Heights Church of Christ, formally Border Street Church of Christ. There was no doubt about her love for Christ. She was a faithful and dedicated member. The epitome of a Proverbs 31 Woman, always caring for her home, children, and others.
Her children never had to worry about a babysitter, Narlene selflessly cared for her grandchildren, friends of the family, and the children of the neighborhood. When she wasn’t watching children, she enjoyed fishing, dancing and cooking. Looking after children was her heart, Ms. Black worked very few jobs during her time.
Ms. Black was a neighborhood icon. She didn’t mind helping those in need and feeding anyone that was hungry, she made sure that no one left her house with an empty belly. Chocolate pie, German chocolate cake, coconut pie, and homemade pound cake were just a few of her infamous favorites.
In 1963, Narlene professed her tender love for Willie James Black when the two joined in holy matrimony, to this beautiful union a blended family of nine children was established. Willie devoted himself to care for Narlene’s children as if they all were his own.
11:01 a.m on Thursday, April 4, 2024, Narlene laid peacefully in her home and answered the Master’s call. Upon her arrival to the gates of heaven, she was greeted by her parents, and children, Johnny Roberts, Royce Scott, and Marvin Black.
A woman described as loving, caring, devoted, loyal, kind, courageous, and God fearing. Ms. Black leaves a legacy of love to be cherished by her children, MyLenda Roberts, Terry (Francis) Roberts, Derwin Roberts, Doris Black, Shelia Chilton, Willene (Sedric) Hill, and Anita (Marcus) Walker; twenty-three grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
